Autoban Design For Heydar Aliyev International Airport

Heydar Aliyev International Airport is one of the many projects that is putting Baku, Azerbaijan on the global architectural map.

About two and a half years ago, Istanbul based design and architecture firm Autoban took on the mammoth project of building and designing an interior for the Heydar Aliyev International Aiport in Baku, Azerbaijan that matches the outside structure and creates an unusually comfortable environment for travellers.

Forming a perfect match of architecture and interior design, Seyhan Oezdemir and Sefer Caglar, the founders of Autoban, envisioned an airport terminal that is more of an experience than a destination.

With the ethos of form, function and experience the designers and architects tackled the terminal interior with a micro architecture approach, bringing a usually uber-sized area down to human scale with 16 cocoons, that are made out of plywood and serve as cafes, shops, restaurants and relaxation areas.

It is the biggest project of the Istanbul architects to date and yet another highly modern addition to the capital which has seen a robust development boom including The Heydar Aliyev Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects and the Flame Towers by HOK.
