In spain’s basque country, a family tames tradition

A couple builds a four-bedroom home in a Bilbao suburb that is contemporary yet has elements of their heritage

Luis Ziskar and Amaia Goñi decided they were going to buck tradition when they built their first home, a mansion in Spain’s Basque Country.

The region, among the country’s wealthiest, has a rich tradition in villas, but those are often rustic in style, with the pitched roofs and visible stones reminiscent of Basque farmhouses. Instead, the couple’s home would be a contemporary geometric showpiece, rendered in limestone and slate.

Mr. Ziskar, a 42-year-old industrial designer, and Ms. Goñi, 44, who helps run her family’s local chain of car dealerships, traded in an apartment in Getxo, Bilbao’s seaside suburb famed for its 19th and early 20th century mansions, for a cul-de-sac in Laukariz-Mungia, a newer suburb in the green hills above Bilbao. The city is the largest in the Basque region, with a metropolitan population of about one million.

The new home situates the couple and their three young children near Ms. Goñi’s parents and offers easy access to the Laukariz Country Club, where Mr. Ziskar, an avid golfer, can enjoy one of northern Spain’s top courses.

In 2010, they bought a roughly half-acre lot for $227,300 and hired Foraster Architects, a Bilbao studio known for upscale residential projects. They spent about $1.28 million building and furnishing the 7,100 square-foot, two-story home, which has four bedrooms, five full bathrooms and one half-bath, and servants’ quarters.
