Inside Westminster Abbey’s secret room

Inside westminster abbey's secret room

Last glimpse of the dusty attic above Westminster Abbey – home to what Betjeman described as a ‘the finest view in Europe’ – in its current form

For more than 700 years it has gone virtually unnoticed, as surely the most spectacular box room in the world.

In a city where penthouse views can command sky-high prices, it boasts some of the grandest of all.

Indeed Sir John Betjeman, the former Poet Laureate and lover of architecture, celebrated one of its vistas as the “finest view in Europe”.

But the rarely-seen medieval Triforium – or gallery – 70ft above Westminster Abbey will soon cease to be one of London’s best kept secrets.

In a few months’ time builders will finally move in to the begin converting the sweeping space, left empty when Henry III rebuilt the Abbey as a gothic church between 1245 and 1269, into a new public gallery to display some of its finest treasures. []
