The owners wanted a residence that would accommodate living and entertaining, containing design elements from their native Belgium as well as American lifestyle. They were insistent on blending indoor and outdoor spaces to take advantage of the lot. They wanted the residence to allow a balance between family activities with frequent and generous hospitality. Other criteria included privacy and maintaining a close relationship with nature, along with directing sight lines to maximize the views.

The property was a blank canvas. Soheil Nakhshab was given freedom to design and engineer a home perfectly matched to the clients’ requirements, a “Mid-Century Modern” home was designed. LEED Gold Certified, the residence contains both passive and prescriptive green features. The first issue to tackle was the home’s placement.

While the site has gorgeous views out into the Olivenhain neighborhood, there were concerns with regards to privacy with the close proximity of a large home and many tract homes. The new home was situated in a way that maximized the best views while maintaining privacy. Also, this placement of the home allowed for abundant natural lighting and ventilation.

With sustainability as a backing philosophy for both the young family and the designer, an early goal was to create a home that felt spacious but did not leave too big of a footprint. Having tremendous play between indoor/outdoor spaces helped achieve a more efficient home that still felt expansive. Twenty feet of retractable glass doors, outdoor kitchen and bar, spacious swimming pool, and a lounge area are a few notable features.

By welcoming nature into the center of the home, the atrium works as a unique focal point for almost every room. A unique floor-to-ceiling stonewall runs through the center home and appears continuous through the atrium feature. The Lahaye Residence project not only delivers on the clients’ aesthetic desires but also achieves their functional goals completely and elegantly.
