The City of Sydney has revealed new visions for an open-air plaza at Green Square designed by Stewart Hollenstein and Colin Stewart Architects.
The plaza will be a new outdoor event space in the Green Square Town Centre, and will sit atop a mostly underground library, which is also designed by Stewart Hollenstein and Colin Stewart Architects. The practices won an international design competition for the projects in 2013.
The plaza design features a glazed entry pavilion, a tower with views of the plaza and a ring of trees, which will frame the space.
The current design for the library and plaza has stayed true to the ambitions of the competition design,” said Matthias Hollenstein, director of Stewart Hollenstein.
“The plaza design has evolved in a very intricate way. It spans a sloping site, yet has been designed to allow for continuous activation along its retail edges and across its width.”
The proposed event space will host major celebrations such as New Year’s Eve, Australia Day and the Lunar New Year. The space will have capacity for up to 4,000 revellers.
It will also be an outdoor venue for smaller events such as live music, fashion shows, art exhibitions and video screenings and international sports broadcasts. […]
