TEMPO is a 280-square-meter restaurant designed by MASAAI Studio in Verona’s historic center through the renovation and unification of two commercial units along Via Stella. Developed to accommodate the changing rhythms of the city from breakfast through dinner, the project establishes a contemporary hospitality environment with an international character rather than relying on familiar references to traditional Italian restaurant design. Organized around a compact kitchen volume expressed through micro-perforated folded sheet metal and stainless steel, the interior openly celebrates its operational functions while maintaining a refined architectural identity. A mezzanine dining level expands seating capacity without disrupting visual continuity, while custom ash wood millwork integrates benches, planters, and partitions to create a variety of intimate dining settings. The restrained material palette combines warm natural finishes with exposed technical elements, seamless flooring, acoustic treatments, and linear lighting, resulting in an interior where efficiency, material honesty, and guest comfort are carefully balanced.

TEMPO is situated along one of Verona’s busiest pedestrian streets and responds to an urban setting defined by continuous movement and a diverse mix of residents and international visitors. Rather than reproducing the familiar visual language often associated with Italian dining, MASAAI Studio approached the project as an opportunity to create an adaptable restaurant capable of serving multiple functions throughout the day. The design reflects the pace of contemporary hospitality, where flexibility and clarity become essential architectural qualities.

Central to the project is the concept of a “machine for eating,” in which operational efficiency shapes both the spatial organization and the architectural expression. The kitchen occupies the heart of the restaurant, enclosed within a precisely detailed volume clad in micro-perforated press-folded sheet metal and finished with stainless steel countertops. Instead of concealing technical components, the design embraces materials traditionally associated with professional food preparation, allowing the restaurant’s functional purpose to become its defining visual identity.

A mezzanine positioned above the kitchen introduces a secondary dining area that provides a more intimate atmosphere while remaining visually connected to the main floor. The continuity between both levels is reinforced through a parapet fabricated from the same micro-perforated sheet metal used throughout the operational core. Its transparency softens the perception of the inserted volume, allowing natural and artificial light to pass through while preserving uninterrupted sightlines across the interior.

The technical precision of the central volume is balanced by a continuous system of fixed millwork crafted from natural ash wood. Benches, integrated planters, and subtle partitions organize the dining room into a sequence of comfortable seating areas without disrupting the openness of the space. Evergreen planting is incorporated directly into the joinery, becoming an architectural element rather than a decorative ornament and introducing a softer layer that complements the restrained material palette.

Throughout the restaurant, MASAAI Studio relies on a limited selection of materials to establish a cohesive atmosphere. Warm ash wood contrasts with seamless gray flooring, neutral-toned walls, black furnishings, and exposed mechanical systems that honestly express the building’s infrastructure. Acoustic ceiling treatments enhance environmental comfort, while linear lighting accentuates the depth of the interior and guides movement through the space. With environmental graphics reduced to the illuminated TEMPO logo, the architecture itself becomes the primary expression of the restaurant’s identity, demonstrating how functional rigor and material restraint can produce a contemporary dining environment with lasting character.
