The adidas Originals flagship store on Anfu Road in Shanghai marks a significant milestone for the brand as its first global flagship in the city, merging contemporary retail design with one of Shanghai’s most historic urban settings. Occupying the former Yongle Cinema, the project balances preservation and innovation, retaining the building’s architectural essence while weaving in design elements that reflect both adidas Originals’ identity and the cultural fabric of the city. TOMO DESIGN and TO ACC curated the space as an immersive retail experience, characterized by kinetic installations, material contrasts, and interactive displays. The facade maintains historical integrity while integrating modern brand elements, including the Trefoil logo and a monumental “Shell Toe” installation. Across its two levels, the store unfolds as a layered journey, from retro-industrial ground-floor displays to a more refined upper level inspired by Shanghai’s old villas. Every detail, from glass embossing to kinetic shutters, is designed to foster interaction and cultural resonance, positioning the store as both a retail destination and a cultural landmark.
I prioritize crystallizing the project’s strategic foundation — establishing precise positioning, distilling core design concepts, and ultimately crafting spatial-brand differentiation to elevate commercial value.
Interview with Uno Chan of TOMO DESIGN

At the junction of Anfu Road and Wukang Road, where leafy streets frame some of Shanghai’s most historic buildings, a new flagship for adidas Originals has taken root within the shell of the former Yongle Cinema. The project redefines what a retail space can achieve when architecture, history, and brand identity converge in a singular narrative.

Rather than erasing the site’s legacy, the architects approached it with an eye toward continuity. TOMO DESIGN and TO ACC retained key elements of the original structure, allowing the building’s history to act as a foundation for adidas Originals’ contemporary story. This duality plays out most vividly on the facade, where stainless steel detailing and glowing signage overlay the original geometry, echoing both the Trefoil logo and the rhythm of the city’s historic window shutters. A monumental “Shell Toe” sculpture at the corner not only activates the streetscape but also positions the store as a social landmark for Shanghai’s youth.

Inside, the ground floor sets a raw yet dynamic tone. Historic textures of terrazzo and concrete meet brushed stainless steel, kinetic shutters, and pixelated lighting installations, cultivating an atmosphere that oscillates between nostalgia and futurism. A Trefoil-shaped centerpiece anchors the space, surrounded by modular frameworks that allow for adaptable product displays and interactive experiences. The upper floor adopts a more refined approach, drawing inspiration from vintage Shanghai glasswork and villa detailing. Here, the layering of embossed glass, wood veneers, and geometric zoning creates a setting where fashion becomes both an exhibition and a personal ritual.

Fitting rooms on both levels extend this ethos, transforming utilitarian spaces into environments of self-expression, where mirrors, light, and tactile finishes encourage reflection as much as trying on clothing. Throughout, the use of custom materials and kinetic installations amplifies a sense of movement and cultural dialogue, in step with the pace of both the city and contemporary youth culture.

The flagship does more than sell products; it embodies the convergence of local identity and global brand presence. By preserving traces of the past while layering on new cultural expressions, the design achieves a delicate equilibrium. The result is a space where adidas Originals is not simply consumed but experienced—a cultural venue where heritage and innovation meet under the shade of Anfu Road’s plane trees.
