AGAL Gallery cultural renovation project designed by IF (Integrated Field) in Thailand transformed a two-story residential home into a gallery space that merges Thai-Chinese design heritage with contemporary expression. The project preserves the building’s original structure while integrating handcrafted materials and spatial modifications, including a central hallway that connects narrow rooms into a functional showroom. A modern photography studio named Saeng Ngao Sathan was added adjacent to the gallery to reflect the owner’s passion for photography, introducing minimalist contrast and expanding the program through a shared gathering space beneath a waffle roof. The gallery presents AGAL’s signature brass casting and gold leaf techniques across display rooms connected by a red walkway, which organizes the spatial narrative and emphasizes contrasts of light and shadow. Each room highlights specific furniture styles, sculptures, and painting works, unifying the brand’s identity through material craft and spatial rhythm.

The AGAL Gallery was originally a well-preserved two-story residence built over three decades ago. Its transformation into a gallery was conceived as a balance between tradition and modernity. The designer was tasked with updating the space to reflect AGAL’s distinct identity, rooted in an elegant synthesis of Thai-Chinese design. The design strategy focused on maintaining the building’s structural integrity while introducing contemporary elements.

This intervention resulted in a seamless fusion of the original character with a modern sensibility. The existing layout, defined by long, narrow rooms, was adapted effectively for a showroom format. A central hallway was introduced to link the rooms, integrating AGAL’s signature handcrafted materials throughout the interior. The redesign respects the original architecture and introduces a renewed aesthetic that defines the AGAL Gallery.

In addition to the home’s renovation, a contemporary photography studio named Saeng Ngao Sathan (Place of Light and Shadow) was constructed adjacent to the gallery. Designed to express the owner’s passion for photography, the studio introduces a minimalist aesthetic that contrasts with the gallery’s ornate character. Both the renovated gallery and the new studio form essential parts of the project, joined by a shared gathering space beneath a waffle roof that unifies traditional and modern architectural elements.

The AGAL Gallery functions as more than a furniture studio; it embodies a broader celebration of Oriental design and craftsmanship. Recognized for incorporating antique Thai-Chinese elements, AGAL has developed distinct techniques such as brass casting and gold leaf application that distinguish its work. The gallery’s spatial design reflects this artisanal focus, shaping a cohesive brand experience. A red walkway links a series of chamber-like display rooms, each dedicated to showcasing specific furniture styles and production methods.

The AGAL Gallery includes a red walkway that connects a sequence of chamber-like display rooms, each presenting distinct furniture styles and craftsmanship techniques. The space was designed to convey a cohesive narrative, using contrasts of light and shadow to shape and emphasize each room. The red walkway serves as a unifying element, underscoring AGAL’s expertise across furniture, sculpture, and the visual composition of light and shadow.
