In Arzignano, Italy, AMAA – Collaborative Office For Research And Development has completed Threshold and Treasure, the new gallery for Atipografia, a project that explores the conceptual and physical meaning of thresholds in architectural experience. Encompassing 565 square meters, the intervention unites a Liberty-era structure with a twentieth-century extension, creating a dialogue between preservation and renewal. The design leads visitors along a deliberate path of transition, encouraging a gradual immersion from the city’s dense urban rhythm into the contemplative calm of exhibition spaces. Through precise detailing, subtle material contrasts, and a spatial sequence of crossings, AMAA transforms the entrance and circulation into integral elements of the gallery’s narrative. The project stands as a study of spatial identity, revealing how architecture can mediate between time, art, and the human act of passage.

Atipografia’s Threshold and Treasure gallery by AMAA redefines the role of the threshold as both a spatial and symbolic construct. Rather than serving as a mere entry, the threshold becomes the central device through which the project articulates its architectural language. Situated within the dense urban texture of Arzignano, the gallery acts as a point of withdrawal, carving out a calm interior realm dedicated to artistic reflection.

The architectural gesture begins at the outermost limit of the site, where the visitor is invited to cross a sequence of transitional spaces that gradually disengage from the noise of the surrounding streets. Each crossing marks a shift in perception, materiality, and light, transforming the simple act of entry into an unfolding spatial experience. The outdoor stair, positioned between the historic Liberty building and the later twentieth-century addition, becomes a crucial element in this choreography. It not only resolves the physical connection between the two structures but also reveals the layered history of the site, exposing traces of time as part of the architectural composition.

Inside, AMAA’s approach remains understated yet deliberate. Materials are treated with a quiet precision that highlights their tactile and temporal qualities, while light is employed as an instrument to define the rhythm of each room. The design avoids spectacle in favor of continuity, allowing art to occupy spaces that are contemplative and open-ended. Collaboration with technical specialists, including Viabizzuno for lighting and Angelo Renna for landscape design, reinforces the project’s balanced dialogue between architecture and environment.

Threshold and Treasure demonstrates AMAA’s commitment to architecture as a form of research, where the act of crossing becomes both an aesthetic and philosophical inquiry. The gallery stands as a serene enclave within Arzignano, offering a measured reflection on how architecture can mediate between the city’s layered history and the timeless presence of art.
