The new exhibition pathway for the Basilica di Massenzio by Alvisi Kirimoto redefines the visitor experience within Rome’s Archaeological Park of the Colosseum. Commissioned by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, the project focuses on reinterpreting the basilica’s monumental scale through a contemporary yet respectful intervention. At its core is a multifunctional stage that serves both as an architectural centerpiece and as a platform for cultural events. Accompanied by renewed flooring and interactive informational totems, the design restores the basilica’s spatial continuity while inviting visitors to engage with the historic structure from new vantage points. Constructed with modular steel and birch plywood, the stage integrates lighting and circulation features that enhance accessibility and comfort. This careful balance of modern craftsmanship and archaeological sensitivity transforms the basilica into a living cultural setting, reconnecting it with the urban and visitor flow of the Roman Forum.

In the heart of Rome’s archaeological landscape, Alvisi Kirimoto’s redevelopment of the Basilica di Massenzio introduces a new spatial narrative that unites preservation with cultural activation. The intervention, part of the Colosseum Archaeological Park’s broader vision for accessibility and reinterpretation, transforms the basilica from a monumental relic into a living public arena. By orchestrating a sensitive interplay between architecture and archaeology, the project enhances both the comprehension and the experience of one of the city’s most imposing ancient structures.

At the center of this transformation stands a new multifunctional stage—an architectural instrument conceived to catalyze dialogue between past and present. Located in the basilica’s central hall, it reinstates the transversal connection once lost to previous structural additions. The stage transcends its utilitarian purpose, becoming a platform for cultural expression where visitors can witness performances and lectures amid the vast remains of imperial Rome. Its open, stepped configuration welcomes diverse audiences, while its materiality—a composition of steel, Keller grating, and birch plywood panels—offers a tactile and visual counterpoint to the ancient masonry surrounding it.

Accessibility and inclusivity guide the design’s spatial logic. Side ramps and staircases connect the aisles, and a second staircase to the north leads toward the apse, providing new vantage points for visitors to engage with the monument. Integrated lighting and subtle steel railings maintain safety without diminishing the aesthetic restraint that defines the intervention. Adjacent benches and temporary dressing areas support event use while preserving the sanctity of the archaeological environment.

Beyond the stage, the intervention extends to the basilica’s forecourt, resurfaced with a blend of natural earth and lime to harmonize with the site’s material palette. Metal informational totems with audiovisual content enrich visitors’ understanding of the basilica’s history and transformation, bridging the gap between digital interpretation and physical experience.

Through this project, Alvisi Kirimoto reimagines heritage architecture not as a static artifact but as a dynamic framework for contemporary culture. Every element—structure, surface, and signage—has been composed to serve both historical continuity and modern engagement. The Basilica di Massenzio thus emerges as a space of renewed vitality, where the legacy of antiquity converges with the rhythm of today’s urban life, reaffirming Rome’s capacity to adapt its monumental past to the evolving narrative of public experience.
