Born Market Surrounding Area public space redevelopment by Vora in Barcelona revitalizes two stretches of Comerç Street, bridging the historic Born Market with the contrasting urban conditions of the medieval core and Eixample Fontserè. Completed in phases from 2015 to 2019, the design introduces recycled cobblestone paving, tree-lined zones, and informal play areas. By drawing on historical traces like the Rec Comtal and creating asymmetrical, green public spaces, the project offers a softer, more domestic counterpoint to the market’s monumental presence while addressing urban needs for open play, environmental comfort, and permeability.

Vora’s redesign of the Born Market Surrounding Area transforms two sections of Comerç Street into a continuous, accessible public space linking França Station and Princesa Street. Situated between the irregular medieval fabric and the structured Eixample Fontserè grid, this part of the city represents a transitional zone. Rather than neutralizing the contrast between the two urban systems, the design highlights it through a strategy focused on material continuity and the introduction of a domestic atmosphere. These adjustments soften the monumental presence of the Born Market and reinforce the human scale of the adjacent public spaces.

Although Comerç Street echoes the proportions of an Eixample avenue, its structure remains asymmetrical, with contrasting façades on either side. The monumental architecture of the market is counterbalanced by more intimate spatial interventions along the street and in the smaller area between Comercial Square and Born Boulevard. These adjustments were designed to enhance environmental comfort while reinforcing the site’s layered urban identity.

Granite cobblestones, many of them recycled, provide a unified surface treatment that extends the existing material language of the Born Market surroundings. In addition to creating continuity, the cobblestones trace historic alignments reminiscent of medieval street patterns. On the section near Princesa Street, the outline of the Rec Comtal, a historic watercourse, is made legible. This portion of the project served as a testing ground for a new method of laying smaller, cut stones with wider joints, creating a tactile contrast while emphasizing historical continuity.

Vegetation plays a defining role in shaping the atmosphere of both redesigned segments. On the side dedicated to infrastructure and services, trees are arranged in a linear formation. On the residential side, trees follow a more irregular distribution that responds to the street’s asymmetrical form. Large tree pits and densely planted beds bring the green canopy down to the pavement level, adding visual texture, shade, and seasonal change to the streetscape.

Grouped seating, planters, and other urban furnishings define small gathering areas. A large sand-covered section on the França Station side improves soil permeability while contributing to the project’s domestic scale. This element also responds to strong neighborhood advocacy for public play areas, particularly in a city center with limited recreational space for children.

Instead of introducing standard playground equipment, which typically requires fenced enclosures, Vora created two unregulated play zones. On the França side, traditional games are marked directly onto the pavement using black basalt cobblestones. On the Princesa side, the stone surface rises into gentle topographies that form a sculpted landscape. As the architects described, it acts as “a surprise, a call to the pedestrian to play, to have fun,” encouraging children and adults alike to use the space in open-ended ways without predetermined rules.

Through subtle topographic shifts, material reuse, and planting strategies, the Born Market Surrounding Area project balances contextual sensitivity with spatial innovation. It responds to both historical memory and contemporary urban needs, reinforcing the identity of Comerç Street while enhancing its role as a lived and shared public space.
