Casa Annunziata, a residential pavilion designed by Specht Novak in Sheffield, Massachusetts, reinterprets minimalist living for its owners after they transition from an 18th-century home. Completed in 2022, the 2,000-square-foot structure features a floating roof with a 15-foot cantilever, a central communal space, and private bedroom suites. Sustainability is integral to the design, with a compact footprint, solar shading, and high-performance insulation reducing energy consumption. The surrounding landscape was restored with native grasses, benefiting local farmers. Moving from a wooded area into an open pasture, the approach to the house enhances the sense of arrival, reflecting the meaning of the owner’s surname, “Annunziata”—a spiritual announcement.

Casa Annunziata embodies a shift toward intentional, minimalist living for its owners, who transitioned from an ornate 18th-century home to a refined, compact residence. The design responds to their desire to downsize while maintaining space to showcase their extensive collection of personally significant artifacts.

When starting any new design, we try to keep the roof planes as simple as possible and carefully consider drainage—even during the earliest conceptual sketches. In my experience, working within these constraints almost always leads to a more creative and ultimately more fulfilling design.

The 2,000-square-foot pavilion is characterized by a thin, floating roof that extends 15 feet beyond the end walls, reinforcing a sense of openness and lightness. The layout is centered around a communal living space, with private bedroom suites positioned at either end. Simple, durable finishes define the interior, allowing the contrast between the clean architectural framework and the owners’ eclectic collection to establish the home’s unique aesthetic.

Sustainability is a core aspect of the design. Rather than expanding the home with unnecessary spaces, the design focuses on essential functions, reducing material consumption and energy use. The cantilevered overhangs were carefully sized to prevent direct sunlight in the warmer months while allowing passive solar heating in winter. High-performance closed-cell insulation in the roof and floor cavities enhances thermal efficiency, ensuring a well-shaded and energy-conscious structure.

Beyond the architecture, the site restoration contributes to the local environment. The property’s large fallow field was revitalized with native grasses, which local farmers now harvest for feedstock. This initiative strengthens the home’s integration with its natural surroundings while fostering community engagement.

The journey to the house enhances its spatial experience. Approaching through a wooded area before emerging into an open pasture creates a sense of transition and discovery. The symmetrical form of the house, positioned at the end of this sequence, reinforces a sense of purpose and arrival. This progression aligns with the meaning of the owners’ surname, “Annunziata,” which translates to “spiritual announcement” in Italian. Casa Annunziata merges minimalism, sustainability, and personal expression, creating a residence that is both architecturally precise and deeply connected to its landscape.
