Centre for Earth Architecture designed by Kéré Architecture in Mopti integrates sustainable design with cultural and community needs. Part of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s (AKTC) initiatives after the mosque restoration and sewerage system installation, the project reclaims lakeside land to provide public access. Aligned with the dike’s crest, the building preserves visual harmony with the mosque. The visitor center comprises three structures linked by two roofs and is built with compressed earth blocks (BTC) for natural thermal regulation. Overhanging roofs provide shade, while ventilation openings ensure natural airflow. The design integrates with the surrounding landscape, including public spaces and a promenade along the dike.

The construction of the Centre for Earth Architecture completes the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s (AKTC) efforts in Mopti, following the restoration of the mosque and the installation of a new sewerage system. The site was created through backfilling at the edge of an interior lake, making the lakeside accessible for public use. The program is designed to address the needs of the district management in Komoguel as well as the visitors to the cultural facilities in the area.

From the crest of the dike, the construction site, and consequently the building project, align visually with the mosque, creating a single sight axis. The building features a clear and structured design, with its height carefully adjusted to integrate with the existing fabric while maintaining an unobstructed view of the mosque. The visitor center is divided into three distinct buildings, connected by two large roof structures. The walls and barrel vaults are constructed using BTC (compressed earth blocks), which are well-suited to the local climate, providing natural thermal regulation and ensuring comfortable indoor temperatures. The overhanging roof minimizes heat insulation on the walls and creates high-quality shaded outdoor spaces. Ventilation openings in the walls and vaults enable natural airflow, allowing the building to remain conditioned without mechanical systems. The surrounding landscape includes expansive public spaces and a promenade along the dike. The design of the new building aligns with this initial planning by maintaining its position adjacent to the dike.
