The Cereal Interpretation Center in Santa Eufémia, Portugal, designed by há.atelier, reimagines a historic watermill as a space dedicated to cultural preservation and education. Conceived as an adaptive reuse project, the intervention restores the original mill and adjacent buildings while creating an interpretation center that highlights the milling process, breadmaking traditions, and the importance of sustainable practices. At 210 square meters, the project integrates exhibition areas, a functional mill for cereal grinding, and a communal space for gathering, education, and exchange. The design carefully respects the existing structures, allowing water to flow through the mill as it once did, reconnecting the building to its natural and historical context. By combining conservation with reinterpretation, the project promotes the region’s cultural heritage while offering a new public function that benefits the community.

The transformation of the Cereal Interpretation Center represents a careful dialogue between preservation and renewal. há.atelier approached the project with the intention of safeguarding a rural heritage asset while simultaneously adapting it to a contemporary role. Rather than imposing new architectural language, the design emphasizes the value of what already existed, allowing original materials, structures, and processes to guide the intervention.

At the heart of the project is the reinstatement of the mill’s hydraulic system. Water is diverted from the river, crosses the building interior to activate the grinding stones, and eventually returns to its original course. This cycle restores the mill’s traditional function while framing it as an educational narrative, offering visitors a direct experience of cultural and ecological systems that have defined the region for centuries.

The programmatic layout unfolds across three primary uses. One area is dedicated to the exhibition of artefacts connected to milling and local agriculture, situating the visitor within a historical context. Another restores the mill itself, ensuring that cereal grinding remains a living practice. The final component establishes a communal space for learning and interaction, where workshops and gatherings create opportunities for exchange across generations.

Within this environment, a single object distills the project’s conceptual clarity. A large stone slab, once part of an access balcony, is repurposed as a central table, supported by wooden legs salvaged from beams of the original structure. This gesture transforms remnants of the past into a symbol of continuity, creating a new focal point for collective use that bridges memory and renewal.

The material palette reflects a commitment to authenticity. Original stone and timber are preserved where possible, while new interventions remain restrained, avoiding excess in favor of careful integration. Each decision underscores the architects’ desire to maintain the spirit of the place, reinforcing its architectural and cultural identity without erasing traces of time.

Through its sensitive design, the Cereal Interpretation Center achieves more than conservation. It reinforces a sense of belonging for the local community while positioning the site as an educational and cultural destination. By weaving together heritage, sustainability, and collective experience, há.atelier demonstrates how adaptive reuse can both preserve and revitalize, ensuring that rural traditions remain relevant in contemporary society.
