Columnating scenic pavilion designed by Found Projects + Atelier Noirs along a coastal highway integrates a viewing platform, parking area, and lawn into a unified landscape through a gradually rising curved concrete retaining wall. The pavilion extends an existing structural grid southward, using a hierarchy of columns ranging from small steel posts to an extra-large periscope tower. These elements double as outdoor furniture, including wall-benches and shaded tables. The open plan beneath an aluminum-clad roof invites free movement and engagement with sculptural architectural features. The ceiling alternates mirrored and frosted stainless steel panels to create shifting light conditions. Rammed concrete columns add tactile depth, mirroring the ceiling’s striped patterns and reinforcing the architectural conversation with the surrounding coastal environment.

Columnating is a scenic overlook pavilion positioned along a coastal highway. The site is composed of three main elements: the viewing pavilion, parking lot, and lawn. These components are brought together into a unified space through the introduction of a curved concrete retaining wall. The height of the wall increases gradually from east to west, evoking the character of large-scale land art that responds to the surrounding topography.

The oceanfront pavilion adopts the existing structural grid and extends it toward the south. This original column grid establishes a foundational rhythm for arranging a new matrix of columns in varying scales: small steel columns, medium-sized concrete columns, large columns functioning as wall-benches, and an extra-large column forming a periscope tower.

These substantial forms function as outdoor furniture, offering tables and benches for visitors. The periscope tower extends through the thin roof, enabling people to look upward and view reflections of distant landscapes.

The open plan beneath the aluminum-covered roof is unobstructed, allowing people to move freely and engage with each sculptural element. The ceiling incorporates alternating fully reflective mirror surfaces and frosted stainless steel panels, producing dynamic lighting effects throughout the space.

The use of rammed concrete introduced texture to the columns, reflecting the striped pattern of the ceiling. Long tables offer shaded areas for rest, allowing travelers to take in coastal views while engaging with the relationship between architecture and the natural environment.
