Dezful House, a single-family residence designed by Mohsen Kazemianfard in Dezful, Iran, reinterprets traditional Iranian courtyard architecture in contemporary context. Completed in 2024, the project integrates privacy, natural cooling, and flexible spaces to suit its hot, semi-arid climate and urban surroundings, fostering a harmonious connection between interior and exterior environments.

Throughout Iranian history, the concept of home has transcended mere shelter, serving as a haven for living, reflection, and connection. Traditionally inward-focused, homes have harmonized with local geography and culture, creating serene family spaces interwoven with nature. Dezful House, situated in the dense urban fabric of Dezful, occupies a site at the end of a three-meter alley, surrounded by neighboring structures and minimally visible from the outside.

The client initially envisioned a multi-story apartment for investment and security purposes, with one unit designated as their residence. However, the architects encouraged a shift in perspective, highlighting architectural values like privacy and open spaces. They proposed a single-family home to capitalize on the site’s unique potential, inspired by lessons from traditional Iranian architecture presented in a modern form. The understated façade subtly hints at the vibrant interior, drawing parallels with historical Iranian designs that prepare visitors for profound inner experiences.

Upon entry, a semi-open transitional area protects resident privacy while inviting light toward the house’s core. Here, a central circular courtyard unfolds, revealing itself as the architectural heart.

The design follows a traditional courtyard layout, embedding the courtyard as a pivotal element that links interior and exterior spaces seamlessly.

The circular ceilings frame serene views of the sky while casting dynamic, curved shadows on the straight interior walls, marking the passage of time. These forms also increase shade in semi-open areas, making them more comfortable during hot days. The second-floor verandas, positioned around the courtyard, act as semi-open, flexible spaces that adapt to various activities and bridge the interior and exterior realms.

Natural ventilation, enhanced by the courtyard’s greenery and central pool, flows through the shaded semi-open areas to the interiors. Opposing openings optimize this airflow, providing comfort in Dezful’s hot, semi-arid climate. This passive cooling strategy underscores the design’s harmony with its environment and commitment to sustainability.
