Set within the dense tropical landscape of Ubatuba, the DRN Residence by Pitta Arquitetura reinterprets contemporary Brazilian domestic architecture through a dialogue between nature, materiality, and climate responsiveness. The 250-square-meter home unfolds across two levels, positioned to preserve a mature jackfruit tree that became the design’s central axis. Featuring four suites, an office, and integrated living spaces, the residence merges interior and exterior through transparent façades and cross-ventilation strategies. Natural materials such as moledo stone, solid wood, and ceramic elements enhance the tactile and visual warmth of the interiors, while the surrounding vegetation, curated by Plantare, creates microclimates that balance privacy and openness. Completed after eighteen months of construction, the project reflects an architectural philosophy centered on comfort, sustainability, and a seamless connection to the Atlantic Forest landscape.

Amid Ubatuba’s humid tropical terrain, the DRN Residence by Pitta Arquitetura stands as a contemporary expression of Brazil’s ongoing conversation between architecture and landscape. The design began with a single gesture: preserving a large jackfruit tree that occupied the site’s heart. Rather than viewing it as an obstacle, the architects allowed the tree to dictate the composition and flow of the residence, establishing a spatial arrangement that celebrates rather than resists the surrounding vegetation.

Organized over two floors, the house’s configuration is both functional and experiential. The ground level contains the social areas, including a double-height living room enclosed by expansive glass panels that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. This transparency connects the interior seamlessly to a decked leisure area with a pool and whirlpool spa, framed by tropical species such as heliconias and banana trees. The kitchen, featuring sliding doors and a central island, reinforces this sense of openness and adaptability, extending the domestic life into the garden.

On the upper floor, two suites and an office occupy a more introspective domain, shaded by movable screens that temper sunlight while maintaining visual permeability. The use of natural ventilation and cross-lighting strategies throughout the home aligns with the firm’s commitment to sustainability and climatic sensitivity, minimizing reliance on mechanical systems. These measures create a dynamic rhythm of light and shadow, particularly evident in the upper-level terrace, where the vegetation forms a suspended garden that mediates the view toward the Atlantic Forest.

Materially, the DRN Residence embraces simplicity and endurance. Closed moledo stone cladding and bespoke carpentry by GM Marcenaria ground the building in regional craftsmanship. Ceramic and rattan lighting fixtures further emphasize tactility and warmth, ensuring that the interior remains as evocative as the exterior. The landscape design by Plantare contributes more than aesthetics; it operates as an acoustic and visual buffer, generating microclimates that preserve privacy while maintaining a constant dialogue with the environment.

Completed after eight months of design development and eighteen months of construction, the DRN Residence captures Pitta Arquitetura’s ethos of contextual design—one that adapts to its setting rather than imposing upon it. Through a nuanced balance of openness, texture, and ecological sensitivity, the residence exemplifies tropical modernism reimagined for a contemporary Brazilian context.
