Located at the southern entrance of the Wutai Mountain scenic area, the Encore Mount Wutai Theater by BIAD-ZXD ARCHITECTS was conceived as a performance space that merges architecture, landscape, and spirituality. The 13,949-square-meter structure accommodates large-scale situational performances, with a vast hall measuring 131 meters in length, 75 meters in width, and 21.5 meters in height. Central to the design is the monumental installation known as the “Sutra Folds,” a 730-meter-long sequence of seven folded walls inscribed with Buddhist scripture. These undulating elements serve as both an architectural prelude and a transitional journey, drawing audiences into the performance as if entering an unfolding manuscript. Constructed from stone, glass, and stainless steel, the theater’s surfaces reflect the sky, mountains, and visitors, blurring boundaries between building and environment. The project not only provides a venue for performance but also creates a meditative space where shifting light, sound, and natural surroundings evoke introspection and spiritual resonance.
My heightened sensitivity to the living environment inspires me—encompassing my aspirations for society and my love for nature and history—fills me with intense passion.
Interview with Zhu Xiaodi of ZXD Architects

The theater distinguishes itself by extending the performance beyond its interior. Visitors encounter the “Sutra Folds” before stepping inside, a sequence of semi-enclosed walls that establish the rhythm of the experience. Their form suggests scripture opening across the landscape, an architectural narrative that mirrors the unfolding of Buddhist wisdom. The folds also create passages for circulation, their lifted edges revealing details inspired by traditional wooden structures, a subtle reminder of cultural heritage within a contemporary composition.

Materiality plays a crucial role in shaping perception. Surfaces of stone, stainless steel, and glass work together to fragment reflections of clouds, mountains, and visitors, softening the building’s mass and blending it into its setting. This deliberate dissolution of volume transforms the theater into a shifting canvas, counterbalancing its monumental dimensions with a sense of weightlessness and impermanence that resonates with the spiritual context of Mount Wutai.

Inside, the expansive hall accommodates the immersive production “Encore Mount Wutai,” which integrates outdoor and indoor performance. Architecture becomes both vessel and performer, with lighting, stage design, and spatial choreography supporting a narrative that unfolds across multiple dimensions. Beyond functionality, the theater operates as a contemplative environment where shadows, sound, and seasonal change shape a dialogue between people and place. Wind bells suspended at the periphery extend this atmosphere, their resonance mingling with the natural setting like distant chants.

Lead architect Zhu Xiaodi frames the project as an architecture that disappears even as it asserts itself, a place that listens, provokes, and inspires. The Encore Mount Wutai Theater embodies this ambition, merging performance with pilgrimage and positioning itself not only as a cultural landmark but also as an architectural meditation on presence, impermanence, and the pursuit of wisdom.
