Flower House by Craig Steely Architecture reimagines a former neighborhood corner store in San Francisco as a luminous family residence that bridges the old and the new. The project embodies a philosophy of adaptive reuse, preserving the building’s urban presence while transforming its interior through inventive spatial interventions. At its heart stands a freestanding flower-shaped tower that subtly organizes the open-plan layout. In collaboration with Studio Ahead, the architects curated furniture and art that harmonize with the home’s sculptural qualities. The resulting residence celebrates continuity, creativity, and a deep respect for architectural memory.
Craig Steely Architecture approached the commission as an act of renewal rather than replacement. By retaining the existing shell of the corner store, the architects grounded the project in the layered narrative of its neighborhood. This choice honors the past without nostalgia, framing the structure’s evolution as a natural part of San Francisco’s changing urban landscape. The design captures the tension between permanence and transformation, allowing the home to stand as both a record of what came before and an expression of contemporary living.
The spatial composition pivots around the central flower-shaped tower, a sculptural intervention that defines movement and enclosure without erecting boundaries.
