Gazorgah House renovation by Torab Home in Yazd restores a historic Qajar-era residence, completed in 2023. The project preserves intricate Iranian architectural elements like muqarnas, taq-o-tavizeh, and shakh-bozi while removing incongruous modern additions. The house now functions as an ecological residence, offering visitors an immersive experience of Iranian culture and heritage.

Gazorgah house / torab home

Situated within one of the prominent alleys of the Gazorgah neighborhood in Yazd, the historic Gazorgah House exemplifies Qajar-era architecture and Iranian craftsmanship. Over time, the house has been reshaped into three sections, with the central one reflecting the dimensions and symmetry of the others. Its design aligns with the aristocratic character of the neighborhood, striving to surpass neighboring structures in detail and refinement.

Among the house’s defining elements is the mezzanine, distinguished by its slender columns and intricate muqarnas, a hallmark of traditional Iranian architecture. Complementing this are the vaulted spaces (taq-o-tavizeh), where pointed arches (shakh-bozi) interplay with light and shadow, producing a dynamic visual experience. These features highlight the ingenuity of the original design and contribute to the building’s aesthetic depth.

The restoration process prioritized the preservation of the house’s historical integrity. Modern additions that were incompatible with the original structure were removed, revealing layers of the building’s historical narrative. One notable preservation effort involved retaining part of the courtyard wall, serving as a physical and symbolic connection to its past.

The ceilings of the Gazorgah House, restored with a harmonious combination of traditional patterns, reflect exceptional craftsmanship. This attention to detail not only secures the house’s cultural and historical importance but also enhances its visual impact.

Now functioning as an ecological residence, the Gazorgah House welcomes visitors to engage with Iranian culture and traditions. By embracing its authentic identity, the house provides a renewed perspective on the enduring legacy of Iranian architectural heritage while celebrating its timeless beauty.
