Geumchon Oulim Centre public building designed by 818 Architects in Geumchon, South Korea engages with its urban environment by embracing adaptability and interaction. Located within a dense context shaped by a century-old five-day market, the project enhances public space by resonating with the market’s dynamic nature. Although the center and the market serve different purposes, their coexistence reinforces community connection. The design retains existing courthouse and registration office buildings set 2.7 meters above street level, using this elevation to create broad steps that open the street frontage. A taut facade contrasts with its surroundings, acting as a backdrop to the market. The center integrates spaces for children, youth, and military personnel across education, culture, welfare, and entrepreneurship, with open courtyards that extend outward, supporting flexible and inclusive use across shifting urban needs.

A city is a living entity, continuously evolving and forming a dynamic balance through interactions and events between people and places. While non-organic structures maintain their form by resisting external influences, organic structures derive vitality from adapting to and engaging with their surroundings. The act of embracing differences and interacting with others promotes creativity and simultaneously shapes subtle boundaries that respond to social relationships and urban conditions.

The site, organized around a century-old market that takes place every five days, is defined by a dense mixture of shops and residences that support active community engagement. The street frequently transforms into a lively and distinctive urban setting, where goods and food are displayed beneath temporary tents.

Although the Market and the Center serve different functions and possess distinct characteristics, they maintain a mutual resonance that enriches the urban public realm. The dual boundary, which reflects the street’s unique attributes, serves as a foundational element of the project. Architecture is understood as both a component of the city and a reflection of it.

A registration office and a courthouse have occupied the site for more than 20 years, with both buildings situated 2.7 meters above street level. By preserving the existing structures and their elevation, most of the street frontage is opened up to introduce broad steps that create a seamless connection with the street. A taut facade is introduced in contrast to the neighboring buildings, highlighting the spatial qualities and acting as a backdrop for the market.

The Center brings together a range of facilities for children, youth, and military personnel, supporting programs in education, culture, welfare, and entrepreneurship. Its open and porous courtyards extend outward beyond the building itself, avoiding exclusive use and challenging rigid urban boundaries. These spaces adapt fluidly to shifting needs and patterns of use, functioning as versatile environments capable of accommodating diverse activities and changes over time.
