Green Cabin, designed by Daymark Design Incorporated, is a 576 ft² seasonal retreat located on Roberts Island in Honey Harbour, Ontario. Completed in 2024, this project complements an existing cottage by integrating contemporary design with its natural surroundings. Clad in sage-green standing seam metal and featuring expansive west-facing glazing, the cabin blends durability and aesthetics to withstand Georgian Bay’s rugged weather conditions. The interior surprises with a retro-modern aesthetic and multifunctional spaces that adapt seamlessly to its owners’ needs, creating a versatile extension to the property.

Green Cabin, a 576 ft² seasonal retreat by Daymark Design Incorporated, exemplifies a harmonious union of contemporary architecture and respect for tradition. Situated on Roberts Island in Honey Harbour, Ontario, the project extends an existing cottage, offering a functional yet contextually sensitive design. Completed in 2024, the cabin reflects an intentional response to Georgian Bay’s rugged terrain and dramatic weather conditions, ensuring both durability and a timeless aesthetic.

Accessible only by boat, the property’s approach reveals a compelling natural setting, with rocky outcrops, wetlands, and forested perimeters framing the elevated original cottage. The new cabin was strategically positioned nearby to foster a sense of connectivity between the structures while adhering to zoning requirements and respecting the delicate site conditions. The raised construction further accommodates fluctuating water levels, a crucial consideration for the region.

The cabin’s exterior is wrapped in sage-green standing seam metal cladding, achieving a monolithic and cohesive appearance. The color palette is inspired by the surrounding foliage and the existing cottage, enabling the structure to blend seamlessly into its environment. In winter, the green cladding contrasts with the snowy landscape, enhancing its seasonal character. A minimalist steel drip edge elegantly outlines the windows, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes by managing rainwater flow and defining the façade’s clean lines.

The west-facing façade features large expanses of glazing, designed to capture panoramic views of Georgian Bay and create a strong connection to the outdoors. In contrast, the east and south elevations are more restrained, integrating with the treeline and featuring ash-clad bump-outs. Operable awning windows punctuate these elevations, allowing for cross-ventilation and offering intimate framed views of the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the cabin departs from its subdued exterior with a vibrant retro-modern aesthetic influenced by 1970s Malibu beach houses. Bold accents of pink and purple, zellige tile, and statement furniture pieces such as the Pierre Paulin Ribbon chair establish a playful yet refined interior character. A skylight placed at the roof’s intersection point floods the interior with natural light, highlighting the sloped ceiling and infusing the space with energy and warmth.

Designed for versatility, the Green Cabin seamlessly transitions between functions, serving as a workout studio, cocktail bar, home office, or guest quarters depending on the needs of its occupants. The design complements the original cottage without dominating it, maintaining the integrity of the site while providing a glimpse into its future potential.
