Guggenheim Abu Dhabi by Frank Gehry Nears Completion on Saadiyat Island

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum, designed by Frank Gehry in Abu Dhabi, defines a major cultural addition on Saadiyat Island as construction progresses toward completion. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum sets out a 42,000 square meter program that establishes the largest institution in the Guggenheim network and reinforces the long-term cultural plan of the United Arab Emirates. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum organizes its program through intersecting volumes that shape galleries with different heights and spatial arrangements. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum supports public and institutional functions through a centre for art and technology, a children’s education facility, archives, a library, and a conservation laboratory. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum reflects a design process first announced in 2006, followed by construction that began in 2011, paused for several years, and resumed in 2019 on the island’s northwestern edge. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum progresses without a confirmed opening date, though an earlier schedule referenced 2025. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum holds particular significance as the final major work by Gehry, who died at the age of 96 after a career that produced cultural buildings such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, which Philip Johnson described as the “greatest building of our time.” Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museum extends a sequence of institutions built on Saadiyat Island, including Jean Nouvel’s Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum by Foster and Partners, and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi by Mecanoo.

The project stands as the final major work by Frank Gehry, who died at age 96. The museum had been linked to a 2025 completion target, although construction continues, and no opening date has been confirmed. During the announcement of the earlier schedule, Gehry described the commission as “truly thrilling” and stated, “I hope that this building is embraced by the people of the UAE and that this work will endure as a landmark for the country for many years to come.”

The design was introduced in 2006, and construction began in 2011 on the island’s northwestern edge. Work paused for several years and restarted in 2019. New photographs reveal intersecting forms that contain galleries with different heights and spatial types. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be operated by the Guggenheim Foundation and owned by the Tourism Development and Investment Company, which commissioned the project. The program includes galleries, a centre for art and technology, a children’s education facility, archives, a library, and a conservation laboratory.
