House Col, a residential house designed by LABANC.STUDIO in Barcelona adapts a 1980s two-generation home to meet present-day spatial and technological demands. Located in Collserola Park, the design worked within strict conservation rules that restricted material changes. The project retained the original structure while reconfiguring its envelope to establish stronger spatial connections with the forested surroundings. Completed between 2020 and 2021, the house features a minimal black and white facade and a reorganized interior layout tailored for contemporary living.

House Col by LABANC.STUDIO reimagines a two-generation residence from the 1980s in Collserola Park, near Barcelona. The project addressed outdated spatial layouts and technological limitations while respecting the park’s strict conservation guidelines, which prohibited material modifications to the original building. Rather than expanding or altering the structural form, the architects retained the existing framework and redefined the envelope and spatial organization to support current living needs and enhance engagement with the surrounding forest.

The design team, led by Tomáš Labanc with contributions from Nadia Alaliová, Avelli Hernandez, and Marko Brkic, worked in all phases, including concept design, building permissions, detailing, and on-site coordination. The structural framework remained untouched, but the building’s interior layout was fully restructured to create clearer spatial relationships and improve circulation.

Visual continuity with the natural surroundings was prioritized. Openings and transitions between interior and exterior spaces were reoriented to strengthen the visual and physical connection to the wooded landscape. The facade was composed as a black and white abstract arrangement of walls and voids. This minimalist treatment avoids visual intrusion and, as the architects stated, was intended to “allow the natural surroundings to stand out.”

LABANC.STUDIO was responsible for both interior and landscape design, ensuring cohesion between architectural, spatial, and environmental elements. Lighting was developed in collaboration with LIK, and Avelli Hernandez provided structural engineering expertise. The completed house spans 275 square meters and was delivered in 2021 as a private commission. The outcome is a carefully calibrated intervention that honors regulatory constraints while renewing the dwelling through precise spatial redefinition and material restraint.
