Huang Pu Cultural Centre public building project by IFRA in Huangpu District, Shanghai has introduced a vertically expressive architectural landmark that reconciles historical context with modern urban complexity. Positioned at the edge of the Ming Dynasty old city wall, the 60-meter-tall structure occupies a dense 6,360 m² site and addresses both symbolic and functional demands. Surrounded by low-rise Shikumen alleyways and contemporary high-rises, the center employs a free-form, upward-growing volume clad in textured white metal panels. Its elliptical plan recalls the shape of the old city wall, while stepped terraces and sky gardens allow light to reach nearby residences. The transparent lobby connects to the urban square and skyline, and interior circulation is dramatized through a grand staircase and elevated corridors. The main theater interior is unified by flowing horizontal light strips that merge functional elements into a continuous spatial form. Curved facades with perforated metal cladding produce a shifting light pattern, visually echoing Shanghai’s dynamic and layered urban identity.

The Huangpu Cultural Center is situated on a site measuring 6,360 square meters, featuring an above-ground construction area of 21,744 square meters and an underground area of 23,692 square meters. The building reaches a height of 60 meters. Positioned at the southern edge of the old city wall in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, the design of the project is required to balance practical functionality with symbolic presence, aiming to establish a recognizable cultural landmark at the center of Huangpu that supports a wide range of uses.

The sharp contrast between the low-rise, layered Shikumen alleyways to the north and the modern high-rise residential towers to the southeast generates a fragmented and conflicting urban condition. Within this highly varied context, a surreal architectural form is required to enable the cultural landmark to assert itself against the surrounding visual complexity and disarray.

The complex and varied internal functional demands, along with the constraints of a relatively compact site, resulted in the development of an architectural form that grows freely upward. Expressive curves and enveloping materials give the building a dynamic sense of vitality and creativity. Its distinctive white form sets it apart from the dense surroundings of high-rise towers and alleyway neighborhoods. The expressionist and organic design language continues from the exterior into the interior, reinforced through the use of curvilinear and free-form geometries. Moreover, the overall plan adopts an elliptical layout, reflecting the historic outline of the Ming Dynasty old city wall.

The building’s volume narrows as it ascends, incorporating a stepped terrace configuration that introduces accessible terraces and sky gardens at each level. This approach establishes a dialogue with the adjacent low-rise residential structures in the alleyway neighborhoods, ensuring sufficient natural light reaches these areas and that the building’s overall scale does not adversely affect its surroundings.

The interior lobby space connects directly to the urban square and the distant cityscape through a transparent facade. Within the audience lounge, a gradually unfolding grand staircase and horizontal corridors aligned with the facade emphasize the movement of visitors as they enter and exit, significantly enriching the spatial experience and adding a sense of engagement and dynamism.

The interior design of the main theater incorporates horizontal, ribbon-like lines as its central visual feature. These fluid light strips extend continuously to the ceiling, integrating side lighting, front lighting, and balcony elements into a cohesive and unified interior environment.

The building is wrapped in a sequence of segmented and textured white facades. The rhythm and gradient patterns formed by the perforated, continuously curved metal cladding generate a delicate interplay of light and shadow. This effect gives the structure a shimmering, constantly shifting appearance when viewed from various heights and angles, reflecting the dynamic, diverse, inclusive, and continuously evolving character of Shanghai.
