What inspired you to become a glass designer?
I’ve always been captivated by the beauty and versatility of glass as a material. Growing up, I was surrounded by nature, and I often found myself mesmerized by the way light interacts with different elements, especially crystals and rocks. This fascination with natural formations and their intricate details led me to explore glass as a medium to capture and recreate that beauty. The ability to mold and shape glass into stunning, translucent works of art that reflect the world around us is what inspired me to become a glass designer. Every piece I create is a homage to the wonders of nature and a testament to the endless possibilities of artistic expression through glass.
Stained glass, as a form of painting in glass, was an inspiration for me to pursue studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and become a glass designer. The intricate designs and vibrant colors of stained glass windows fascinated me, and I wanted to explore the possibilities of using glass as a medium to create my own artistic expression. This passion led me to immerse myself in the world of glass art and design, ultimately shaping my career path.
How would you describe your design philosophy?
My design philosophy centers around the harmonious fusion of nature and art. I believe in drawing inspiration from the natural world, with its intricate patterns, textures, and forms, and translating that beauty into glass designs that evoke a sense of wonder and connection. Each piece I create aims to capture the essence of nature’s elegance while also exploring the limitless possibilities of glass as a medium. I strive for a balance between functionality and artistic expression, ensuring that my designs are not only visually stunning but also practical and meaningful. Ultimately, my goal is to create glass art that resonates with people on a deep, emotional level, inspiring them to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day. I also pay attention to taking care of our planet, which is why I created glass from the waste generated in my studio and named it Glasstrico. In this way, I operate according to the zero-waste principle.
What is your favorite project?
It is a glass installation located in the Hilton Hotel in Gdańsk. It was my first such large-scale installation. I have very fond memories of the conceptual work with the owner of this hotel. Everything happened for the first time on such a large scale, so this project is very close to my heart.
What is your favorite detail to incorporate into your glass designs?
One important detail is the edge, as it can remain in its natural, molten form or be polished to shine in the light. This is a feature that often fascinates people about glass. The edge is very important because it can convey different textures and finishes, adding a unique character to each piece. This attention to detail is something that often captivates people and makes them appreciate the craftsmanship involved in glass design.
Do you have a favorite type of glass to work with?
My favorite type of glass to work with is fused glass. I have spent the last 30 years perfecting this technique and discovering new possibilities. The process of fusing different pieces of glass together to create unique designs and patterns is incredibly rewarding. The versatility of fused glass allows me to experiment with various colors, textures, and forms, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind pieces. This technique not only showcases my craftsmanship but also highlights the endless creative potential of glass as an artistic medium.
How do you see the role of glass in architecture?
Glass in architecture imparts lightness, space, and depth. Buildings that are glazed reflect their surroundings, yet also blend into them. This reflective quality not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the structure but also creates a harmonious relationship with the environment. Additionally, glass allows for innovative architectural designs, pushing the boundaries of traditional building materials. It offers the ability to create transparent and translucent surfaces, which can be used to play with light and shadow, adding a dynamic element to the space. Furthermore, glass can contribute to the sustainability of a building by providing natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and improving energy efficiency. Overall, glass plays a crucial role in modern architecture, combining functionality, beauty, and environmental consciousness.
What is your process for starting a new project?
When I start a new project, it’s important for me to meet with the client and the interior architect. An interview with them helps me determine the aesthetic in which the glass installation should be created for a given interior. Later, I outline several conceptual variants, and then we choose one and work on it further. From my side, I prepare samples of the glass I would like to use. Of course, it is most enjoyable when the client gives me creative freedom.
How do you balance function and creativity in your designs?
Balancing function and creativity in my glass designs is an essential part of my process. I believe that a piece should not only be visually captivating but also serve a purpose and meet the practical needs of the client.
To achieve this balance, I start by understanding the functional requirements of the project. This involves discussing with the client and other stakeholders to determine the specific needs and constraints. For example, if the glass piece is intended for an architectural installation, it needs to be durable and safe, as well as aesthetically pleasing.
How does the environment influence your work?
The environment plays a significant role in influencing my work. I draw a great deal of inspiration from the natural world around me—its forms, colors, textures, and patterns. Observing the way light interacts with different elements in nature, such as water, leaves, and rocks, provides me with creative ideas that I incorporate into my glass designs.
Moreover, my commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility shapes my approach to creating glass art. I strive to use eco-friendly materials and techniques, such as repurposing waste glass and minimizing energy consumption during production. This not only reduces the environmental impact of my work but also aligns with the principles of the zero-waste movement.
