Napp Studio & Architects designed the JAGDA 2024 exhibition as a spatial interpretation of Japanese graphic design’s enduring discipline and refinement. Taking cues from Shinto architecture, the installation reimagines the exhibition as a “temple of graphics,” where visitors experience a sequence of arrival, entry, and congregation. The design merges graphic precision with architectural craft through an elegant use of wood joinery and a disciplined material palette. Despite its temporary nature, the exhibition’s impact extends through a sustainable framework that allows materials to be repurposed and adapted for future use, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship within contemporary design practice.

The JAGDA 2024 exhibition transforms the act of viewing graphic design into an immersive architectural experience. Napp Studio & Architects approached the project not as a gallery but as a narrative environment, where movement through space mirrors the ritual progression of entering a sacred site. Visitors are guided through subtle thresholds that cultivate anticipation and awareness, culminating in a collective spatial encounter that celebrates the artistry and discipline of Japanese graphic design.

Central to the project’s concept is the analogy to Shinto architecture. The architects drew inspiration from the purity and restraint of shrine design, translating its ceremonial language into spatial rhythm. This framework encourages contemplation and reverence while maintaining accessibility and openness. Through this synthesis, the exhibition achieves a rare harmony between tradition and contemporary expression, inviting visitors to perceive graphic design as both a cultural artifact and a living practice.

Material honesty defines the architectural expression. The structure relies on pine wood rods joined through precision craftsmanship, their tactile warmth contrasting with the graphic works on display. The system of joinery embodies both functional and symbolic significance, revealing a devotion to detail that parallels the discipline of graphic design itself. The result is a space that feels both crafted and constructed, ephemeral yet enduring in its effect.

The collaboration with Offscreen in graphic adaptation deepened the dialogue between spatial and visual design. Rather than treating the exhibition as a backdrop, the architects integrated the graphics into the architectural rhythm. Each visual element finds its place within the structural composition, producing a unified sensory field. This seamless integration reflects the shared principles of proportion, alignment, and clarity that define both architecture and graphic design.

Behind the precision lies a strong commitment to craftsmanship and practicality. Hattrick Creative and Screw Up Studio executed the build with a sensitivity to detail that ensured the design’s conceptual clarity translated faithfully into physical form. The construction process emphasized efficiency and reusability, aligning with the project’s short duration while ensuring high standards of finish and assembly.

Sustainability operates as both an ethical and aesthetic foundation for the project. Every material was chosen with its afterlife in mind. The pine wood rods, once integral to the exhibition’s spatial framework, will later be transformed into functional objects such as poster frames, extending their utility beyond the event. Steel components were designed for disassembly and compact storage, ready for reuse in future exhibitions. Through these measures, the installation transcends its temporal limits to embody circular design principles.

In merging ritualistic symbolism, material intelligence, and sustainable foresight, Napp Studio & Architects have created more than an exhibition setting. The JAGDA 2024 project stands as a reflection on how temporary architecture can generate enduring meaning.
