JINS SWFC Shop, designed by junya.ishigami+associates in Shanghai, redefined retail interior design by introducing large-scale cantilevered concrete tables to form a low, open architectural landscape within a dense shopping mall. The interior was conceived as a spatial void framed by five prestressed concrete tables, each cantilevering up to 12 meters in length to maximize display and circulation. Floating volumes divide the shop into six zones and accommodate stock storage and functional programs, including a glasses fabrication workshop between tables four and five. The construction uses a steel frame encased in cast-in-situ concrete. The 25-centimeter-thick prestressed concrete slabs create a perception of lightness despite their mass, leaving space beneath and heightening the visual effect of floating.

In order to introduce a vast emptiness within the dense environment of the shopping mall and to present the interior as an architectural composition, a simple design solution was developed for the store.

The interior space consists of five cantilevered tables made of concrete, with the longest reaching up to 12 meters. These elements were designed with extreme proportions, combining maximum length with minimal width and depth to optimize linear display areas and circulation routes for customers. The shop’s interior void is divided into six distinct zones by suspended volumes, which are used to store a large quantity of stock and house functional programs, including a glasses fabrication workshop positioned between tables four and five, as indicated in the plan.

The construction method reinforces the architectural character of the interior, using a steel structure encased in cast-in-situ concrete. Even the furniture elements function as integral parts of the structural system.

Furthermore, to enhance the experience of the interior as a low, expansive landscape, all tables are kept completely horizontal and uniformly positioned at a height of 80 centimeters above the floor.

The prestressed cantilevered structure, clad in heavy concrete, achieves a sense of floating lightness through the contrasting weight of its materiality. Its 25-centimeter depth leaves ample space beneath the tables, preserving the visual impression of levitation.
