The renovation of La Muna transforms one of Red Mountain’s earliest residences into a contemporary retreat that responds closely to its Alpine surroundings. Oppenheim Architecture reestablished the home’s clarity after decades of alterations, using an approach grounded in natural materials and environmental sensitivity. Reclaimed wood, stone, and weathered metals form a palette chosen for its ability to harmonize with the site’s forests, stream, and rugged terrain. Expansive operable glazing brings daylight and landscape views deep into the interior, reinforcing an experience shaped by proximity to nature. Solar collection systems reduce the dwelling’s environmental impact, supporting a design intent focused on quiet integration rather than architectural imposition.

The design team approached the project by uncovering the house’s original qualities rather than erasing its past. They recognized that the accumulated modifications concealed a structure with meaningful potential, and they used restraint to guide the transformation. The renovation became an act of distillation, revealing a simple and enduring character aligned with a wabi sabi sensibility. Natural materials were selected not only for their visual relationship to the site but also for their capacity to age gracefully, allowing the house to settle further into the mountain landscape over time.

Transparency and environmental responsiveness shape the life of the interior. Large insulated glass panels open to the outdoors, creating a fluid boundary that shifts with the seasons and draws the surroundings into daily experience. Solar collectors supply energy for power and hot water, reinforcing the goal of minimizing resource demands in a sensitive environment. The result is a residence that balances restoration with contemporary refinement, presenting a quietly confident presence that honors both the site and its architectural lineage.
