The Ljunghusen House by KFA Arkitekter, located in Falsterbonäset, Sweden, near the Skanörs Ljung nature reserve, integrates with its forested surroundings, as regulations limit clearing to the residence. Influenced by the moor, the design features a tall, narrow volume facing west and a lower angled structure for practical and guest spaces. The L-shape and rhododendron bushes create a sheltered garden, while a plinth foundation protects pine roots. The house retains summer home simplicity with grey-brown spruce panels, oak windows, and sliding wooden screens. Inside, functional spaces include a double-height dining area and an upstairs terrace overlooking the moor, with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace below connecting to the garden.

Ljunghusen is situated on the narrowest section of Falsterbonäset, between Öresund and the Baltic Sea. The area is forested and borders the Skanörs Ljung nature reserve, characterized by its expansive moorland landscape.

Planning regulations stipulate that large lots may only be cleared for the residence itself, preserving the forest as the dominant environmental feature. As a result, each residence is designed as a clearing within the forest.

The plot’s proximity to and views of the open moor determined the house’s orientation and form. The design consists of a tall, narrow volume facing west toward the view and a lower, angled structure that includes a carport, storage room, workshop, and guest house.

Rhododendron bushes, combined with the L-shaped configuration of the house, create a sheltered, enclosed garden space.

The tall volume is partially elevated on a plinth foundation to protect the root systems of nearby pines.

In a region historically dominated by summer holiday homes, the design seeks to retain the simplicity of the summer house aesthetic while accommodating year-round living.

The facade features spruce paneling in a grey-brown shade that mirrors the tones of the surrounding pine trunks. Windows and doors are crafted from lacquered oak, while sliding wooden screens offer sun protection on the south side and provide privacy from the neighboring house to the north.

The entrance floor includes a kitchen, laundry room, bathroom, study, living room, and a dining area with a double-height ceiling. Upstairs, there is a bedroom with a bathroom and a room overlooking the moor, which opens onto a partially roofed terrace. Beneath the upper terrace, an outdoor kitchen, dining area, and fireplace face the south garden, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.
