Mégalithes Stone Totems project, designed by Maignial Architectes & Associés + Mathieu Collos Architecture in the Haut-Languedoc massif introduces contemporary stone markers that reinterpret Neolithic heritage. Four new totems placed at the region’s main entrances evoke menhir and dolmen typologies through vertical and horizontal stone assemblies. Built from locally sourced granite and gneiss in raw form, the structures integrate with the environment and endure climatic conditions. The project connects archaeological memory with contemporary architecture, reinforcing the cultural identity of the Monts de Lacaune landscape.

The Mégalithes Stone Totems project is embedded within a landscape defined by centuries of human presence and distinct geological character. The intervention responds to a territory where ancient stone monuments still influence cultural narratives. Rather than replicating historic structures, the design references anthropomorphic menhir forms and dolmen typologies to create new architectural markers. These totems act as narrative thresholds, framing entry points into the Monts de Lacaune while grounding them in the context of regional memory.

The placement of four totems at separate entrances structures a journey through the territory. Each position corresponds to a unique topographical condition and historical context, ensuring that the markers are not interchangeable but site-specific. Their orientation and scale engage directly with the landscape’s visual axes, using height and mass to signal arrival while remaining proportionate to the surrounding terrain. This siting strategy transforms them into both wayfinding devices and silent witnesses to the continuity of local traditions.

Construction relies on granite and gneiss sourced directly from nearby quarries. The use of raw, unpolished surfaces preserves the stones’ natural qualities and mirrors the texture of historic megaliths without imitating them. Local craftsmanship informs the assembly techniques, recalling the labor-intensive methods that originally shaped prehistoric monuments. By relying on materials and practices native to the region, the project reinforces cultural continuity and avoids visual dissonance within the natural environment.

The design’s restraint ensures the new totems complement rather than compete with archaeological remains dispersed across the Monts de Lacaune. Their contemporary character is expressed through proportion and spatial alignment rather than decorative detail, allowing visitors to experience both ancient and modern layers simultaneously. This subtlety turns the structures into mediators between memory and present-day use, sustaining the landscape’s evolving identity without erasing its origins.
