Nicolas Bravo Market public project by AIDIA STUDIO in Nicolás Bravo, Quintana Roo has strengthened community identity and connected local production with tourism through a crafts and produce market. Developed under a government-funded urban improvement initiative, the market supports the socio-economic integration of underdeveloped municipalities in Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. Completed within a 7,700 m² footprint, the building features 50 stalls arranged under a hyperbolic paraboloid vaulted roof, only interrupted by two central courtyards. Designed with a lightweight steel frame, colored concrete slabs, and clay brick cladding, the structure prioritizes low maintenance and long-term resilience. The vaulted design reflects a form-finding approach that merges architectural expression with biophilic integration into the local environment, while also operating as a multifunctional space for cultural events and workshops.

MERCADO is a crafts market designed to support the local community by presenting their handmade products and fresh produce to both visitors and tourists who come to explore the nearby Mayan archaeological sites. The project’s development was part of a government-funded initiative focused on improving urban conditions in underdeveloped municipalities in Mexico. In this particular case, the objective was to connect the region’s expanding tourism sector with the needs of communities in the Yucatán Peninsula.

The market provides a variety of offerings that support and preserve the cultural identity and heritage of Nicolás Bravo, a municipality with fewer than 5,000 residents in the state of Quintana Roo. It also functions as a community center, hosting activities such as cultural events and workshops that encourage education and enhance well-being.

The project demonstrates the architects’ commitment to a resilient architectural approach, emphasizing construction techniques and materials chosen to require minimal maintenance over the building’s lifespan. The structure is primarily composed of four elements: a lightweight steel frame, pigmented reinforced concrete slabs and parapets, colored concrete blocks, and clay bricks used as cladding for both the roof and the pavement.

The building is organized on an 8 by 8 meter structural grid, covering a 7,700 square meter footprint and accommodating 50 stalls. A vaulted roofing system extends across the entire market, interrupted only by two central green courtyards. The roof, shaped like inverted umbrellas, forms a hyperbolic paraboloid structure. This configuration reflects the architects’ focus on form-finding to achieve both architectural expression and structural efficiency. Moreover, it incorporates a biophilic design approach that harmonizes the building with its natural surroundings.
