Pedestrian Bridge in Jonava, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge designed by Architektüros linija in Jonava, Lithuania, has improved urban mobility by linking residential zones to the Jonava Sports Arena across a major traffic corridor. Completed in 2021, the steel structure addresses infrastructure demands while contributing a sculptural form that aligns visually with the arena. Developed through close municipal collaboration, the project enhances both functionality and identity in a previously disconnected part of the city.

The Pedestrian Bridge in Jonava emerged in 2016 as part of a broader initiative by the Jonava municipality to improve intra-city connectivity. Architektüros linija led the architectural response, beginning with an analysis of site-specific challenges and the client’s broader expectations. Multiple design alternatives were developed, each aiming to address logistical constraints while introducing a meaningful urban presence.

The impressive structure—60.85 meters long, 8.6 meters high, 9.96 meters wide, and weighing 172 tons—will serve not only as a bridge between two parts of Jonava but also as a striking landmark and a unique piece of architectural art.

The bridge provides a crucial link between residential neighborhoods and the multifunctional Jonava Sports Arena, spanning a heavily trafficked highway that previously acted as a barrier. By facilitating pedestrian and cyclist movement, the project resolves a longstanding mobility gap while encouraging more sustainable modes of transport.

The final design was selected for its spatial ambition and formal clarity. Its sculptural structure, made primarily of steel, introduces a distinct visual identity while reinforcing the architectural language of the adjacent sports facility. Together, the bridge and the arena establish a unified ensemble that strengthens the character of the surrounding urban fabric.

Material choice played a key role in the project’s execution. Steel enabled the realization of the dynamic form while ensuring structural efficiency and long-term resilience. The bridge’s form not only accommodates the functional needs of circulation but also stands as a visual landmark within the city.

Developed in close collaboration with the municipality and technical partners, the bridge is both an infrastructural intervention and an architectural statement. It addresses practical needs while contributing symbolically to Jonava’s evolving urban narrative, offering a contemporary solution grounded in contextual awareness.
