The new Princeton University Art Museum redefines the role of the academic museum as an open, permeable civic institution embedded in the life of the campus. Designed by Adjaye Associates, the building more than doubles the size of its predecessor while remaining grounded in Princeton’s architectural heritage and landscape. A series of interconnected pavilions aligns the museum with established circulation routes, allowing it to function as an extension of everyday campus movement. Gallery spaces are largely consolidated on a single level to foster new curatorial relationships across cultures and histories, while educational, research, and social programs are distributed throughout. Materially, the project balances permanence and transparency through stone, bronze, and high-performance glazing, paired with warm interior finishes. Achieving LEED Gold certification, the museum integrates advanced environmental systems that support energy efficiency and rigorous conservation standards.


Sited along McCosh Walk between Elm Drive and Chapel Drive, the museum occupies a central position within Princeton University, where academic paths, public gathering spaces, and landscape converge. This location reinforces the institution’s dual identity as a scholarly resource and a cultural destination for the broader community.

The architectural strategy avoids a singular monumental form in favor of nine interrelated pavilions. This approach reflects the scale and rhythm of the surrounding collegiate fabric, allowing the building to integrate seamlessly into its context while introducing a contemporary architectural language.

Two primary axes organize the plan, corresponding to established desire lines across campus. These routes form artwalks at ground level that remain accessible beyond gallery hours, ensuring the building remains animated throughout the day and woven into daily campus life.


Gallery spaces are conceived as a sequence of volumes punctuated by in-between zones that frame views of college landmarks, outdoor sculpture, and landscape. This spatial rhythm encourages movement, pause, and orientation, situating the art collection within a broader environmental and cultural setting.

The building responds to the site’s natural slope by stepping down to form terraces and open-air courtyards. These outdoor spaces support gatherings ranging from intimate academic events to large public assemblies, extending the museum’s program into the landscape.

Landscape design plays a critical role in mediating between architecture and site. Mature elms and beeches along McCosh Walk are preserved where possible, while new planted terraces soften the building’s edges and reinforce a sense of continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.


Material expression contributes to the museum’s tactile and visual identity. Alternating rough and polished stone aggregate panels are paired with bronze and triple-glazed windows that capture changing light conditions, lending depth and texture to the façades.

Interior spaces are shaped by exposed glulam beams and finishes of terrazzo and wood, establishing warmth and human scale within major public areas. Spaces such as the Entrance Hall and Grand Hall support lectures, performances, and informal gathering, reinforcing the museum’s role as a place of exchange.

Environmental performance was integral to the project’s conception, resulting in a LEED Gold–certified building aligned with Princeton University’s sustainability objectives. A high-performance envelope, advanced humidity control systems, and selective zoning allow efficient operation while protecting the collection and supporting extended public use.
