Rolex Boutique Toronto designed by PARTISANS for Royal de Versailles Jewellers transforms the ground floor of a modernist high-rise on Toronto’s Bloor Street into a striking architectural statement. Completed in January 2024, the digitally fabricated limestone facade integrates advanced computational design, crafted in collaboration with Italian architect Arturo Tedeschi. The fluidly sculpted stone contrasts the rigid steel of the high-rise, with column rhythms inspired by a watchband. Seamless integration is achieved as the mullions bend into arcs, linking the facade to the structure and interior. Precision detailing ensures exact alignment between stonework, mullions, and curved glass showcases. A CNC-etched parametric design on the east facade enhances the boutique’s aesthetic, embodying Rolex’s timeless legacy and the innovation of Royal de Versailles.

PARTISANS have consistently explored material innovation in their projects. Early works included sculpting cedar for the Grotto Sauna and CNC-machining mahogany for Bar Raval. More recently, at the Canvas House, they collaborated with masons to install over 16,200 bricks in a custom square-shaped “Voxel-Bond” pattern inspired by the dot paintings of artist Larry Poons. Just months later, in January 2024, Alex Josephson and his team at PARTISANS unveiled a digitally fabricated limestone facade for Royal de Versailles Jewellers’ new Rolex boutique in Toronto. According to Josephson, “Stone is future heritage… it’s having a renaissance.”

The Rolex boutique by Royal de Versailles occupies the ground floor of a modernist high-rise on Toronto’s prestigious shopping strip, Bloor Street. To set itself apart from the other luxury boutiques in Canada’s most exclusive neighborhood, Royal de Versailles collaborated with PARTISANS to create a distinctive architectural presence. Known for their innovative designs and forward-thinking research, PARTISANS worked with Italian architect Arturo Tedeschi, utilizing computational design and advanced technologies to craft the boutique’s striking facade.

The digitally fabricated limestone facade creates a striking contrast against the steel structure of the modernist high-rise, presenting a dynamic interplay of texture, form, and elegance. The sculpted limestone features columns with rhythmic patterns reminiscent of a watchband. While the fluid cuts in the stone contrast with the building’s rigid framework, the design achieves seamless integration as it transitions into the mullions of the storefront. As these mullions extend down the high-rise’s exterior, they gradually bend into gentle, graceful arcs, embodying a balance between the existing architecture and contemporary geometries.

Ian Pica-Limbaseanu, a designer at PARTISANS, credits the facade’s success to “the digital stone connecting sinuously with the existing exterior and the new interior.” He highlights critical junctions where precision was essential, such as “where the stone meets the mullions of the existing facade above and where the stone meets the rounded glass showcases of the interior.” Each stone bay was meticulously cut based on measurements obtained through 3D scans of the existing structure. The window detailing posed unique challenges, requiring alignment with the exterior stonework to within 1/4″, while also ensuring easy maintenance, optimal energy performance, and delivering an unprecedented glazing design for Bloor Street.

The east facade features a CNC-etched parametric composition in the limestone, created through an algorithmic design developed in collaboration with computational designer Arturo Tedeschi. This design results in an innovative and harmonious interaction of materials, reflecting the timeless legacy of Royal de Versailles and Rolex. Tedeschi described working with PARTISANS as “a remarkably smooth and productive experience, which allowed for a seamless exchange of ideas.” He further noted that “the clear, precise boundaries set by PARTISANS ensured all our interactions were focused and effective, while their deep understanding of the value of algorithmic modeling significantly enhanced the project, enabling us to transform complex data into meaningful forms.”
