The Sports Center for Überlingen School Campus by wulf architekten serves as the centerpiece of a larger master plan uniting the city’s secondary and high schools near Lake Constance. Conceived as a versatile facility for education and community athletics, the 5,600-square-meter complex integrates a three-court gymnasium, a gymnastics hall, and a hall for ball sports. A façade of white expanded metal and a distinctive folded roof express both structural precision and contextual sensitivity, mediating between the surrounding residential fabric and the campus scale. Within, exposed concrete and metal elements shape a calm, bright environment filled with daylight. Designed for flexibility, transparency, and inclusivity, the building establishes a civic presence that enhances Überlingen’s educational and sporting identity.

The new sports center articulates a balance between form and function through its sculptural geometry and refined material palette. The freestanding structure presents a clear and confident figure, yet its folded roofline softens the visual mass, echoing the rhythm of neighboring rooftops. This architectural gesture allows the volume to harmonize with its environment while maintaining a distinct profile that signifies its public role. The façade’s expanded metal skin introduces texture and depth, capturing shifting light throughout the day and lending the building an elegant, dynamic quality that complements its athletic purpose.

Transparency defines the building’s relationship to its surroundings. The glazed ground floor opens the interior to the adjacent schools and sports fields, dissolving boundaries between inside and outside. The lower level accommodates the main gymnasium, lobby, and bleachers, while the upper floor contains the halls for gymnastics and ball sports. The spatial organization emphasizes clarity and movement, offering access points from multiple directions that strengthen the building’s integration within the campus network. Each component has been designed to enhance visibility and accessibility, reinforcing the center’s role as a connective link across educational and recreational spaces.

Beyond its programmatic efficiency, the sports center embodies civic generosity. Wulf architekten have crafted a structure that not only fulfills athletic requirements but also enriches the social life of the campus. Its restrained palette of concrete, metal, and glass conveys both strength and openness, while natural light creates an atmosphere conducive to concentration and performance. In this interplay of function, form, and context, the building transcends its utilitarian origins, emerging as an architectural landmark that contributes to Überlingen’s identity as a community shaped by learning, health, and shared experience.
