Tetris House, designed by Atelier RZLBD in Toronto and completed in 2013, showcases efficient space management influenced by the game “Tetris.” The 3,000 ft² (280 m²) structure is built on a narrow lot, with the architects maximizing functionality through the strategic use of natural light and continuous built-in millwork, seamlessly connecting various spaces. The exterior mirrors the geometric arrangement of the interior, enhancing both aesthetics and practically, resulting in a modern and visually striking home.

Atelier RZLBD approached the design intending to utilize every inch of the 40′ by 110′ lot, creating a three-story home that supports a large program typically found in a 4,000 ft² house. The layout includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms, two laundries, a nanny room, a home office, and spacious living areas, among other features. Despite zoning restrictions, the architects ensured no space was wasted, achieving maximum efficiency while incorporating ample storage and entertainment areas.

To maintain compactness, the house features a central light well that runs from the upper floor to the basement, bringing natural light throughout the house. This design element is a subtle nod to Tetris, creating vertical continuity with a glass-covered opening that brings light into the living room.

A 55-foot-long built-in millwork wall on the ground floor adapts to different needs, from office shelving at the entry to kitchen and dining cabinets and a fireplace in the living area. The seamless integration of these spaces avoids congestion, enhancing storage and maintaining a modern look. The spatial arrangement, mimicking Tetris block, required careful attention to height clearances and stair landings, with each level adapted to its function.

The house’s exterior, a blend of various materials and cladding, boldly reveals the Tetris-like interior configuration. While not aiming for a harmonious facade, it creates an intriguing and attractive visual display of geometry.
