The residential project designed by Studio Millspace in the center of Tainan City, Taiwan has introduced a refined architectural dialogue between contemporary design and the city’s historical urban context. Positioned on an irregular triangular plot between a quiet residential neighborhood and a future commercial zone, the design establishes spatial coherence through a composition of blocks and volumes that respond to orientation, function, and surroundings. The project preserves the low-rise character of Tainan’s urban fabric while integrating courtyards, recessed openings, and balconies for climate-responsive ventilation and nuanced light play. A centrally placed skylight enhances vertical connectivity and brightness, transforming the stairwell into a spatial and social nucleus within the home.
Located in central Tainan City, one of Taiwan’s earliest developed urban areas, the residential project occupies an irregular triangular site between a quiet neighborhood and a future commercial district.
The design employs volumes and block arrangements to form spatial divisions and guide interior orientations, while merging thoughtfully with the surrounding context. According to the architects, “the design respects Tainan’s historical low-rise urban fabric while introducing contemporary elegance.” Monumentality was intentionally avoided to maintain coherence with the neighborhood scale.
Balconies and recessed windows generate layered light and shadow effects. Open courtyards and patios facilitate natural ventilation suited to the southern Taiwanese climate. A skylight positioned at the center of the house allows the staircase to function beyond simple circulation. It acts as a light-transmitting element, enhancing brightness while supporting visual connections and interaction between family members throughout the day.
