Triode Residence, designed by Kamat & Rozario Architecture, was created for two sisters and a brother seeking closer family living after the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The design ensures connection and privacy, maintaining a human scale despite site constraints. A split-level concept positions street-facing bedrooms lower, enhancing interaction with the street while defining distinct living zones. The upper apartments share a rooftop amphitheater for family gatherings and screenings, alongside communal amenities like a gym, laundry, and guest room. The western facade features a metal louver system that reduces glare while maintaining transparency, extending into an industrial interior palette of exposed concrete, metal, and wood. The topmost apartment includes a private courtyard, shaded by the same louvers, with skylights beneath the amphitheater bringing in natural light and enhancing openness.

Designed for two sisters and a brother, this project emerged from their desire to live closer together after experiencing the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having spent years living in different parts of the city, the pandemic underscored the significance of proximity and connection. The shared building embodies their vision of strengthening family bonds while preserving individual independence and privacy for each household.

A key objective of the project was to create a building that felt approachable despite the site’s limited size and significant spatial requirements. The design aimed to maintain a human scale, preventing the structure from appearing overwhelming while maximizing usable space.

To achieve this, a split-level concept was implemented for each apartment, utilizing the lower height required for car parking. This approach positioned the two street-facing bedrooms closer to the ground, fostering a stronger connection with the street. Separating living areas across different levels created distinct zones within each home, enhancing individuality, a characteristic typically found in standalone houses.

The two upper apartments adopted a similar split-level configuration, which enabled the inclusion of a shared rooftop amenity space featuring an amphitheater. This space functioned as a family gathering area, suitable for movie screenings and other shared activities. In addition, communal facilities such as a gym, pool table, laundry, and guest room were available for all three apartments. The split-level design effectively concealed this communal floor from view, preserving the building’s low and approachable profile.

The western facade, serving as the building’s primary connection to the street, required careful design considerations. Managing glare and heat from the western sun was essential while maintaining a visual connection to the street. To address this, a custom-designed louver system, made of thin yet deep metal sections, was integrated to reduce glare, cast shadows over the glass surfaces, and provide effective shading, all while preserving transparency and connection to the exterior.

This functional approach to the facade not only addressed environmental requirements but also shaped the building’s overall aesthetic. The industrial language, introduced through the metal louver system, extended seamlessly into the interiors of each apartment. The integration of exposed concrete, metal sections, and wood further reinforced the cohesive industrial style, achieving a balance between raw materiality and comfort.

The topmost apartment, designed with one fewer bedroom than the other units, accommodated a small private courtyard. This outdoor space is shaded by the same metal louvers that define the front facade and roof, providing protection from direct sunlight. Moreover, skylights beneath the rooftop amphitheater allow natural light to flood the top-floor apartment, enhancing spaciousness. The result is a building that meets the specific needs of its residents while demonstrating thoughtful engagement with its surroundings. With each apartment occupying a single floor, privacy is ensured, while shared amenities foster interaction among residents.
