Winterfell House residential project designed by Prithvi Architects in Shoolagiri, India is a camouflaged structure integrated into the terrain of the Sanctity Ferme community, offering an ecologically sensitive retreat rooted in natural materials and Universal Design Principles. The architecture follows the contours of the landscape, preserving native vegetation and boulders while elevating the structure to maintain natural drainage patterns. The house opens to panoramic views through curved glass, mesh windows, terraces, and open decks. A natural depression in the northeast corner has been transformed into a two-level swimming pool with zones for children and adults. The use of mud walls in living spaces conveys warmth, while service zones adopt gray finishes that reflect the surrounding stone. Sustainable methods such as poured earth concrete with low cement content and ferrocement are used to minimize environmental impact. Interiors focus on built-in furniture and raw finishes, including terrazzo flooring and exposed concrete roofs that preserve formwork textures, blending minimalism with a deep connection to place.

Winterfell is a camouflaged architectural work, designed to blend organically with the terrain, flowing smoothly into the lush green landscape and the naturally placed boulders. Located in the picturesque village of Shoolagiri within the Sanctity Ferme community in Tamil Nadu, it serves as a peaceful retreat from urban life, offering a setting for living in close connection with nature.

Winterfell’s design philosophy prioritizes authenticity and accessibility. Every component, though functional, contributes to the overall harmony of the house’s architectural composition. In alignment with Universal Design Principles, the structure adapts to the site’s natural undulations while ensuring that all spaces remain fully accessible.

The building’s organic form is inspired by the natural rocks and dense tree cover present on the site, allowing the structure to integrate smoothly with its surroundings. It is elevated to maintain existing drainage patterns and to minimize environmental impact. Winterfell provides expansive panoramic views through curved glass panels, mesh windows, open decks, and terraces that extend outward from the main volume. In the northeast corner, a valley-like depression was intentionally transformed into a two-level swimming pool, offering a shallow zone designed for children and a separate deeper section for adults.

The walls, built from mud, convey the warmth of the earth within habitable areas, while service zones such as toilets and staircases are finished in gray tones that reflect the natural color of the surrounding rocks. Sustainable construction methods support this approach. Techniques including poured earth or raw earth concrete, composed with a low percentage of cement, have been applied to form durable walls with reduced environmental impact. Moreover, lightweight materials such as ferrocement have been incorporated to complement the structural system.

The landscape design integrates native tropical plant species alongside the existing trees. Hardscape materials are selected and categorized according to their functional roles; for instance, pathways and ramps are constructed using locally sourced cobblestones, while the car parking area is surfaced with waste granite stones obtained from a nearby quarry.

The interiors of Winterfell highlight a minimalistic elegance, incorporating built-in furniture including beds, wardrobes, seating areas, and kitchen counters. Durable terrazzo flooring provides a clean, refined surface, while the concrete roof slabs retain visible shutter marks, showcasing the raw character of the material. This integration of modern design with natural elements results in a living environment that honors the landscape, reinforces an organic architectural approach, and reflects a holistic relationship with its surroundings.
