Yngsjö Retreat House residential project by Johan Sundberg Arkitektur in Yngsjö, Sweden integrates a minimal, context-sensitive design into a pine-forested Baltic Sea landscape, enhancing natural continuity and seasonal use for a family of four. Completed as a single volume aligned north–south, the house features a recessed western terrace at its core, offering evening sun shelter. The southern volume with kitchen, entry, and shared spaces rests naturally on the terrain, while the northern section housing private rooms elevates on pillars, opening bedroom views directly to treetops. Clad in larch panels with vertical pilasters, the exterior presents a measured rhythm. Inside, oak flooring and custom joinery contrast with unified larch-lined ceilings, which deliver acoustic dampening and spatial calm. The retreat maintains architectural clarity while preserving a respectful relationship with the natural forest surroundings.

Set among the undulating pine-covered hills of Yngsjö near the Baltic Sea, this summer retreat was designed for a family of four. The surrounding environment favors the natural forest over cultivated gardens, allowing small-scale structures to integrate seamlessly within the woodland setting.

The house consists of a single volume oriented along a north-south axis, with a recessed central section facing west that includes a sheltered terrace exposed to the evening sun. The southern portion, which contains the entrance, kitchen, and communal spaces, connects directly to the ground, creating a smooth transition into the surrounding natural landscape.

The northern half of the house, which contains the more private areas, is elevated above the ground on slender pillars, creating a direct visual and spatial connection to the treetops through large bedroom windows.

The facade of the house is clad in larch panels, rhythmically punctuated by vertical pilasters to create a cohesive visual expression. The underside of the elevated structure is finished with triple-layered larch panels. Inside, oak is used for the floors, trimmings, doors, and custom-built carpentry, grounding the interior spaces. The ceiling and its extended overhangs feature a continuous larch surface with a slender profile, contributing both acoustic dampening and a calming atmosphere throughout the home.
